HOW TO STUDY EFFECTIVELY

The competition in today’s world is increasing at a very immense rate and wherever you see there is competition in this world, in every field. This competition is most among the students, which sometimes results in depression among teenagers. Everybody wants to get into a good school or university. and to become a successful person in their life. To do so one of the most important things that a student must do is to get good marks in exams or tests because the value of marks in our society is more than the learning. Even though many people will say that marks don’t matter but they really DOES matter. Every person has different abilities which cannot be measured by my marks. The importance given to marks is correct to some extent because they are specially designed in a way to know the reasoning and intellectual ability of a child. To get good marks we have to study and we have to study with EFFICIENCY. A very big and common question arises in the mind of all students, whether they are good in studies or bad that How to study effectively? How to study in a way that you will remember everything? How to study to get good marks in exams? Today I will share 5 Points with you that will surely make you study effectively.

1. Know what to study

Before we start to do anything we should exactly know what to do. The biggest mistake done by students is that they don’t even know what they have to do, that’s why we should h be clear about our goal, what we have to study. you should carry a notebook to write things done in case you don’t forget them. Controlling your schedule and your distractions will help you to accomplish your goals. If you are in control of your calendar, you will be able to complete your assignments and stay on top of your coursework. Before going to bed each night, make your plan for the next day. Waking up with a plan will make you more productive and you be able to achieve more. If you write things down, schedule them you will be able to do better even if you get any problem writing them. This makes you understand it better, as Charles Kettering said “A Problem Well Stated is Half Solved”.

2. Quality not Quantity

Not all the ways of studying are equal. You can learn something in a silent room for 30 minutes and you can learn the same thing in a less silent environment for 2 hours but you will perform better in the 1st way because in a silent room you can be more focused and would be able to achieve more with better efficiencies. You don’t have to reread books again and again instead you have to read books to full concentration. You have to get more out of your time. You should be completely focused and committed to your current task. The book “Deep Work” of Cal Newport says work accomplished = time spent x intensity of focus. Our goal is to study effectively but not for hours.

3. Remove Distractions

The biggest enemy to our studies is the number of distractions. Most of us get distracted by push notifications, text messages and phone calls. According to research conducted by Dr. Larry Rosen, professor emeritus at California State University, Dominguez Hills, “the typical student” is “distracted for at least five out of every 15 minutes they set aside to study,” most often as a result of texting and social media use. Constant notifications and text messages are every student’s enemy. Put your phone on silent or in “Do Not Disturb” mode So that, you won’t get distracted. Defeat procrastination by breaking a large project into small pieces. Try giving yourself a 10-minute break for every 45-50 minutes of work you do. Studies show that taking breaks can help you retain information and increase productivity. Is your desk covered with stacks of papers? Is your computer monitor framed with layers of sticky notes? If so, it’s time to get organized. A messy workspace can keep you from getting your work done. Go through your desk and keep only the essentials. A clean workspace can help reduce anxiety and make room for motivation.

4. Teach it to others

The Roman philosopher Seneca said, “when we teach, we learn.” Research has shown that when students teach a topic to someone else, they demonstrate a greater effort to learn material compared to students learning for their own sake. This is called The Protégé effect. Expecting to teach and teaching can lead to increased motivation to learn, since people will often make a greater effort to learn for those that they will teach, than they do for themselves. Furthermore, such benefits are not limited to academic settings, as studies show that preparing to teach can also improve motor learning and enhance information processing when learning to perform physical tasks, such as how to hit the ball in golf. When you have to teach others you learn the materials thoroughly and with full motivation which helps you very much as you get to know about the material in a better way. As the great Albert Einstein said “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

5. Practice, Practice, Practice

Musicians practice their instruments. Athletes practice sports skills. The same should go for learning.

“If you want to be able to remember information, the best thing you can do is practice,” says Katherine Rawson. IF you don’t practice what you learned, what want to learn. You will never be better at that. This is just a bunch of knowledge If you don’t apply all these rules in your life. The more efficient you are with your practice time, the more focused your sessions, the more quickly you’ll learn and the faster you’ll excel. Effective practice means actually going in the direction you want to go, and doing so in a relatively efficient manner. That means setting goals and actively pursuing them. Sometimes those goals can be small – like a specific skill. Other times they can be big picture goals. Either way, setting goals and practicing specifically to achieve those goals maximizes your time, efficiency, and ultimately will give you the best chance of achieving those goals.
